A sebaceous cyst (epidermoid cyst) is a small benign lump under the skin that can grow, become inflamed or infected. Treatment consists of removing it entirely, with its wall, to prevent it from coming back.
Anyone bothered by a cyst, especially if it grows, becomes infected repeatedly or is on a visible area.
Consultation, then excision at the practice through a small incision, outside a phase of infection.
Local anaesthesia.
Dressing, local care for a few days, removal of stitches.
A small scar; the risk of recurrence is low when the wall is removed completely.
Like any procedure, this one carries risks that are rare but real (infection, haematoma, healing problems, asymmetry, reaction to anaesthesia...). They are explained in detail during the consultation, with written information.
During infection, the inflammation is treated first; complete removal is done once it has settled.
No: this encourages infection and recurrence.
